A Clinical Psychologist is trained to Doctoral level to assess, understand and treat psychological distress, across the lifespan. However, since qualification, I have specialised in the mental health of adults.

Psychological Formulation

We will develop an understanding of how your past informs your present, and what might helpfully change, in order for you to achieve what you want for your future. This part of our work is called psychological formulation, and this ever-developing understanding remains a central guiding principle for our work together.

Integrative therapy

I work integratively, which means that I draw from a wide range of theories and disciplines to provide the therapy to best suit your situation. This might include:

✦ Third wave Cognitive Behavioural Therapies (CBT), including mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion-focussed approaches.

Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) which allows me to offer a balance between longer term attachment focused psychodynamic psychotherapy approaches, with newer, more time-limited cognitive therapies.

✦ Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), a popular therapy which pinpoints traumatic memories so that they can be processed and integrated.

✦ I draw on theories of the nervous system and body during stress and trauma, applying mind/body somatic techniques where helpful/appropriate.

✦ I am informed by ego state theory and parts thinking particularly when working with complex developmental histories.

Somatic Integration and Processing

My most recent and empowering training to date was in a model called Somatic Integration and Processing. SIP is an interpersonal neurobiology based formulation tool that uses psychodynamic neurodevelopmental theory, models of memory, and nervous system informed somatic psychology to understand, interpret, and use bio/psycho/social/cultural information to guide you towards balance and safety.

On paper it’s a pretty heady bringing together of prominent theoretical perspectives.

In the room, it feels like an authentic space to explore your internal world with the support and guidance of an attuned and highly specialist, trauma-informed therapist and fellow human.
