“Stress” is meant to be short lived, and dipping in and out of a stress state actually can prepare your system for future stress and therefore be advantageous in the longer term. With a little activation in the system we become focused, strong, determined, clear. We know what’s important. Its an error to believe that stress energy is always negative.
But even the impacts of prolonged or chronic stress/ trauma can be improved or reversed if we are able to sooth the system, giving it a clear message that we have returned to a place of safety.
Of course there are some circumstances where special care/ help/ therapy might be necessary to reach that place. But formal therapy isn’t the only solution and it’s not for everyone at all times.
Any activity which enables you to feel SAFE following a period of increased stress will be heading you in the right direction for neuroplasticity, your brains own incredible capacity to grow and reorganise. This might involve movement, exercise, connecting, laughing, slowing down, breathing, learning, sleeping, meditating, journaling, feeling, talking, bathing, running, asking, giving. The list is endless and very individual.
It’s true that toxic experiences trigger toxic chemicals but it’s just as true that tonic experiences trigger the tonic ones.
